"Black Friday", as it is referred to today, has the result of retail stores turning big profits. These profits, in accounting terminology, put the retailers "in the black" instead of losing profits or being "in the red". This day is also closely watched by economists to measure the stimulus it has to the United States economy. Since 2005, Black Friday has arguably been the busiest shopping day of the year. Many big-name retailers for example, Target, Kohl's and Best Buy to name a few, open their doors at midnight.  Retailers now try to spread the shopping out by offering promotions throughout November and December. Total dollars spent on Black Friday shopping fell in 2014 to a mere $50.9 billion. This was the first drop since the recession in 2008 and was attributed to this extension of holiday promotions. Small Business Saturday Small Business Saturday takes place between November 24th and November 30th. This day is one of the busiest shopping periods of the year as consumers flock to their favorite local small business vendors.  First observed in the United States on November 27, 2010, Small Business Saturday is within the same theme as Black Friday and Cyber Monday. These are days when shopping at [...]

Having an Internationally recognized day for people to stop, celebrate and promote understanding in human differences is valuable. The main purpose of this day is to help all of us appreciate the differences in our cultures and try to unite. In addition to sending beautiful flowers, there are other International Day of Friendship activities that can be enjoyable.  Several governments, individuals, and community interest groups work to schedule events that are designed to create or renew friendships within their communities and extending outside of their communities.  Parades displaying multiple country flags followed by music festivals hosted by multi-cultural bands are commonplace. If you are looking for some fun things to do on International Day of Friendship, below are a few ideas you can encourage children to do. Create a book filled with photos and stories about your special friendships. Create a big poster symbolizing all of the values of friendship. Make goodie baskets filled with special treats and give them to friends. Make homemade friendship bracelets The kids can create a friendship class book. Have kids write about what a friend means. Ask the kids to share stories about friends and try to find common things. Teaching children early learning about the value of friendship and embracing differences is important. However, adults can get to together with friends and create strong friendship bonds as well. Let's face it, the world we live in today possesses an elevated level of miscommunications, mistreatment, lack of trust, discrimination, and cultural discord. The value of a day like International Day of Friendship can go a long way to minimizing those issues. Peace in our global society, while difficult to obtain is still a worthy pursuit.  The United Nations can be thanked for introducing International Day of Friendship in 2011. They experience every day the value of building bridges among cultures, countries, and even ideologies. As far as simple things adults can do to foster better friendships, below are a few ideas: Share a meal - If you have not seen friends in a while and want to reconnect, planning a lunch, dinner or happy hour can be a great start. Do it in the name of International Day of Friendship to add meaning to the occasion. Mayfield Florist has been creating gorgeous wedding and event flowers since 1982 Reality is that the pandemic in early 2020 had an impact on many things. This included creating a problem for US Florists in receiving timely and complete flower orders from flower farms. It is now strongly recommended that if you are needing to have Wedding Flowers in the next 6-9 months, you should start wedding planning with a florist as soon as possible.  Mayfield Florist is the premier florist in Tucson AZ specializing in the floral planning of elegant weddings. The flower shortage facing all florists is a combination of several factors. One thing is evident and that is most florists in the US and beyond are feeling the pressure. All are doing their very best to find ways to continue servicing their client base in the best way possible. At Mayfield Florist, we have a professional team of wedding planning experts and designers that create stunning flower bouquets. We would be honored and delighted to get started with you in planning your wedding. Flower Supply Challenges Global Pandemic - We all understand the impact this horrific event had worldwide. This 2020 event snowballed into effecting many different industries including Wholesale Flower Growers. Many had to shut down farms due to quarantine requirements. This in turn resulted in laying off many workers and destroying tons of flowers. Some farms have not reopened and appear to have gone out of business. Breaking it down further to real numbers, the National Association of Wholesale Distributors reported that there were 5.64 million employed in the US floral industry at the end of December 2020. That equates to 247,717 jobs lost between 2019 and 2020. That is the lowest level of floral industry employment in the past seven years. Then furthering the problem was the reduced number of flowers that were grown. Increased Number of Weddings - There is a huge increase in the number of weddings. Many were postponed due to the Pandemic. The U.S. Wedding Report study reported that in 2021 there were an estimated 1.93 million weddings scheduled. That number for 2022 has climbed to 2.47 million. This increase in the demand for wedding flowers coupled with the supply issues is making the problem worse. Mayfield Florist Bridal Bouquets Environmental Changes - Climates in some regions where flowers are grown have changed. In South America, they are reporting colder nights and more rainfall which has negatively affected flower production. Then domestically, many farms are located in California which as we know has been suffering from severe drought conditions. As people have gotten back to normal and begun planning events again, there are now fewer flowers and workers to load trucks. Sadly, many flowers are left to die in the heat because they cannot be loaded onto trucks. Foreign Political Pressures - In many parts of the world there are political unrest matters. This is true in Ecuador which is a major supplier of wholesale flowers. There are many [...]

Shop with Mayfield Florist for National Rose Month

Mayfield Florist has the best red roses in Tucson and was Voted Best Florist in Tucson Arizona Mayfield Florist is the best florist to purchase roses from in the Tucson area. We have roses of all types and colors.  This June is National Rose Month and is the perfect time to shop with Mayfield Florist. Not only do we offer roses, but we also have many other varieties of flowers and plants to choose from. Recently, I was provided with a sensational article regarding roses that was written by the Chairman of the Society of American Florists. There is so much great information in the article, and it is so relevant for National Rose Month that I wanted to share it. Roses are the most popular flower in the world, with over a billion stems sold annually. Over 250 million are produced for Valentine’s Day alone. They are popular because of their beautiful colors, shape and petal structure, as well as their lovely fragrance. While many landscape roses have 5 petals, hybrid tea roses, those produced for commercial cutting, can have up to 40 petals. Best of all, there are always new varieties to discover with over 150 rose species and thousands of fabulous cultivars. June is National Rose Month, a perfect time for me to share with you some of my favorite varieties, not ranked, because they are simply too beautiful to pick a favorite. Alabaster is a breathtaking, off-white rose with many soft, delicate petals. Catalina warms my soul with creamy yellow petals that reveal sunshine as they open. Ashley is a luscious pink rose that is not too pale and not too bold. Juliet captivates me with a very interesting petal structure and perfect peach color. Miyabi Wabara is a pink rose with a peach heart and wonderfully ruffled petals. Free Spirit combines yellow, peach and pink in its countless petals. Just WOW! I am often asked how to care for cut roses and respond with a few tips: Keep the water clean. Bacteria is our primary enemy and you can limit bacterial growth by rinsing the vase daily and refilling with water. Cut stems with a knife or very sharp pruners. Dull scissors will pinch the Xylem and Phloem closed and restrict the uptake of water. Use the flower food provided by your florist. The old wives' tales about aspirin and pennies are lore and not based on any science. The food is most essential during the first two water changes, so do not worry if you run out. If a rose wilts prematurely, do not trash it. Simply give it a fresh cut and submerge the entire rose in warm water for an hour or so. It will rehydrate and look great for many additional days. Fun fact: Most of the world’s cut roses are grown in the mountains of Colombia and Ecuador. The altitude and proximity to the Equator means lots of year-round sunshine and the perfect combination of temperature and humidity. Also, please [...]

Visit Mayfield Florist to find the Most Elegant Easter and Passover Flowers

Mayfield Florist Interestingly, Easter is referred to as the "moveable feast" meaning that it is one Religious Holiday that moves from year to year. This year Easter falls on April 17th.  The reason for this change is that Easter always falls on the first Sunday after the first full moon following the spring equinox.  Easter, as with other holidays, ushers in a changing of the seasons. That season of course being Spring. Mayfield Florist would be pleased to have you shop with us for Easter and Passover Flowers. In the Jewish faith, this time of the year is referred to as Passover. The Hebrew Bible commemorates Passover as a festival which celebrates the liberation of the Jewish people from slavery in Egypt. This is referenced in the Book of Exodus. During the time of Jesus, Jewish pilgrims flocked to Jerusalem in hope that God would liberate them from the Romans. On one Passover, Jesus traveled to Jerusalem and the resulting disturbance in the Temple ultimately led to his crucifixion. Passover Flowers are an appropriate gift.  The best colors for this holiday are usually Blue and White. Early history reveals that the Easter festival was more celebrated by Catholics than Protestants. The Puritans of New England considered both Easter and Christmas as festivals for heavy drinking and merrymaking. However, by the 19th century this belief had changed, and the holidays became a time to spend joyous moments with family. Today customary traditions of Easter Egg Hunting, Parades and the Easter Bunny have become the norm. Mayfield Florist offers a great nice selection of thoughtful Easter flowers, Easter lilies, Easter themed flower arrangements and Easter Centerpieces. Our flowers are grown by local farmers and come direct from the farm. This ensures that our flowers and plants are the highest quality and freshest available anywhere. Visit Mayfield Florist on this Veterans Day for the very best flowers and plants to honor a Veteran

Mayfield Florist The curious history surrounding Veterans Day on November 11th is interesting and quite unique. In 1918 on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, all major hostilities of World War I were formally ended.  Veterans Day was initially referred to as Armistice Day and was created to celebrate the service of all U.S. military veterans. A respectable and loving way to honor a Veteran on this special day, is to send a flower arrangement or plant from Mayfield Florist. In 1919, President Woodrow Wilson gave a memorable speech where he highly commended the men and women of the United States military. "To us in America the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country's service, and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of nations". Both Armistice Day and Remembrance Day are celebrated in other countries as a remembrance to the end of World War I. In 1954, Veterans Day became the official name in the US to honor our military men and women. Veterans Day differs from Memorial Day. While both days honor our military, Memorial Day is designated to honor those who died while fighting for our country.
